How Southern Company Leveraged Automation to Significantly Improve their Processes Case Study Client Profile The Challenge Coordinating Industrial Hygiene and Safety Throughout The Enterprise With 4.4 million customers, 30,000 employees and more than 46,000 megawatts of electrical generating capacity, Southern Company is the premier energy company serving the southeastern United States. A leading producer of clean, safe, reliable and affordable electricity, Southern Company owns electric utilities in four states; operates a growing competitive generation company; and is the licensed operator of three nuclear generating plants. Southern Company's various subsidiaries used a multitude of software systems to meet their safety and IH needs, but did so in an independent manner. "One of the projects talked about for years was to have all of Southern Company move to a single software solution. The Oracle-based system used for storing safety incidents in the three largest subsidiaries was over twenty years old, and the smaller companies were using Access databases," explains Brandon Cassidy of Georgia Power's Industrial Hygiene/ Corporate Safety Department. "A lot of the things that we wanted to do were impossible with the tools we had." Knowing that a new system was required was just the first step of a lengthy selection process, one complicated by the different requirements of the different stakeholder organizations. "Every single company has their own safety department and management structure, and so we had to spend a little bit more time to have one final product that would meet the needs of each group," says Brandon. The lack of system consistency and system functionality led Southern Company to look to the EHS software market to see if something was available that allowed for a single, integrated system.
