How Rio Tinto Aluminum Leveraged the Power of a Single EHS Platform Case Study Client Profile The Challenge Poor Data Quality and Long-Term Retention Issues Rio Tinto Aluminium (RTA) is one of the world's largest producers of bauxite, alumina and aluminium. Their operations are spread across multiple sites in Australia and Asia. Ron Capil, Fellow of the Australian Institute of Occupational Hygienists (FAIOH), and Certified Occupational Hygienist (COH), is Principal Advisor Occupational Health and Hygiene at Rio Tinto. He is responsible for providing health and hygiene direction and support to the various Australian sites, which have over 4000 employees. Before Cority's implementation, Industrial Hygiene staff relied on unsecured and inconsistent excel spreadsheets to record and manage their monitoring data. "We had lots of data quality issues, lots of data retention issues, and certainly no transparency at a corporate or even at a site level to be able to view or see the data and track monitoring progress easily," says Ron. HEADQUARTERS Melbourne, Australia INDUSTRY Aluminum, Bauxite and Alumina Mining OPERATION SCOPE 4 mining operations, 4,000+ employees PRODUCT SUITES Occupational Health & Industrial Hygiene This problem would be compounded whenever a member of the team left the organization. Any employees leaving the team (or moving to other locations) would often result in data being lost, either due to locally saved spreadsheets or lack of backups. Internal audits identified two major problems. First, there existed significant data quality issues. Second, the auditors questioned RTA's ability to adhere to long-term data retention regulations, which required many of their records to be kept for decades. Change was clearly required.
